Bakersfield Community Mourns 17-Year-Old Levi Jermaine Carter Brown After Fatal Independence High School Football Game Incident
Levi Jermaine Carter Brown, 17, of Bakersfield, California, died after a fatal incident during a football game at Independence High School on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Bakersfield police responded shortly after 8 p.m. as Independence High School hosted Centennial High School, and responders took Levi Jermaine Carter Brown to Kern Medical, where officials later pronounced the teen deceased.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified Levi Jermaine Carter Brown as the person who died.
Authorities arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the case, and police said the investigation remained active as of August 27, 2026.
Students later held a walkout and called for stronger security at Kern High School District events, including metal detectors and added safety staffing.
