Matthew Blades, Cleveland Police Officer, Dies At 37 In August 22 Road Crash During Early Morning Duty

Matthew Blades, a 37-year-old Cleveland police officer, died on August 22 after an early morning road crash during active duty.

The crash happened at about 3:39 a.m. after a car carrying five male passengers crossed onto the wrong side of a dual carriageway and collided with a police car.

Officials said Matthew Blades, colleague Tom Clough, 38, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, and Makai Saddington, 18, died at the scene.

Matthew Blades served the public with dedication, and family tribute statements remembered a loved one who showed patience, kindness, courage, and deep devotion to two young children.

His family said the loss left a space that could never be filled, while his memory will remain with those who knew and loved him.

The pursuit reportedly lasted under seven minutes before officers ended it, shortly before the fatal collision occurred.
